Sanders endorses Clinton & the Secret Service dumps Sanders

After a long, often contentious, and surprisingly successful primary campaign, Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton for the presidency on Tuesday morning at a New Hampshire rally.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders offered a full-throated endorsement of Hillary Clinton today, asking his supporters to get behind the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee
  • “Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process,” Sanders said, as he placed his hand on her shoulder, “and I congratulate her for that. She will be the Democratic nominee for President, and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next President of the United States”
  • Hillary Clinton mentioned “We accept twenty-seven-dollar donations, too, you know,” as Sanders cracked a smile
  • Clinton said her general-election race against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump will be more enjoyable now that she and the Vermont senator are on the same side. “We are stronger together,” she said
  • No additional joint campaign events have been finalized, and it is unclear what Sanders’ role will be moving forward
  • Following the Clinton endorsement, Sanders emailed his supporters asking them to sign a pledge to “continue the political revolution.” However, he did not directly ask them to back Clinton, instead he urged them to stand with him against Donald Trump
  • “This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency,” Sanders said. “This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face”
  • Trump tweeted that Sanders “sold out to crooked Hillary Clinton. Sanders was not true to himself and his supporters,” followed by another tweet “Bernie Sanders endorsing Crooked Hillary Clinton is like Occupy Wall Street endorsing Goldman Sachs.”
SECRET SERVICE DUMPS SANDERS
  • Bernie Sanders no longer has Secret Service protection earlier today after endorsing Hillary Clinton
  • The Secret Service protection ended after arriving back in Washington following his campaign event alongside Clinton earlier in the day in New Hampshire, sources confirm
  • Sanders received protection from the Secret Service in February which protected him several times from protesters
  • A report from The Washington Post in June said around-the-clock Secret Service protection costs taxpayers more than $38,000 a day, but a spokeswoman for the Secret Service declined to comment to CNN on the duration or cost of Sanders’ protection
  • • Both Clinton, a former first lady who has had Secret Service protection since she left the White House in 2001, & Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, have a detail of agents who protect them around the clock
SANDERS’ SUPPORTERS JOIN TEAM TRUMP
  • The Wall Street Journal wrote a piece interviewing former-Sanders supporters who are now getting on the Trump bandwagon, infuriated that he endorsed Clinton
  • “He is a bigot and a racist,” said one Sanders supporter of Trump. “However, Hillary Clinton has been a scam all her life – and I hope the FBI comes and indicts her.”
  • Trump didn’t waste a second – he immediately started gathering Sanders’ supporters via Twitter
  • “I am now somewhat surprised that Bernie Sanders was not true to himself and his supporters. They are not happy that he is selling out!” Trump tweeted, followed by “Bernie Sanders, who has lost most of his leverage, has totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton. He will endorse her today – fans angry!”
