(YC) – The blockbuster phenomena Titanic premiered in Hollywood California nearly 20 years ago today.
The box office brought in an astounding $2.187 billion with a budget just under $200 million; making Titanic the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide until Avatar (2009). Director Cameron is responsible for both films – giving him a twelve year period to work on new film, Avatar. Titanic was the first film to earn $1 billion.
Titanic was nominated for received fourteen Oscar nominations, winning eleven of them. The film was re-released in 3D (2012) where Kate Winslet made a special appearance at the premier. “We do look very different, we’re older,” she told Vogue. “Leo’s 37, I’m 36 – we were 21 and 22 when we made that film. You know, he’s fatter now – I’m thinner.”
