TRAINER, DELAWARE COUNTY (YC) – A string of car thefts resulted in an extra police detail according to the Trainer Chief of Police.
Update: VIDEO! YC with two others who work at the garage found the suspect.
It all went down Thursday morning just before 2 a.m. when two officers in an unmarked police car noticed two black males trying to open door handles of vehicles on 9th & Sunset St.
When police approached the men, one seemed on edge.
One of the suspects was compliant, however, the other pulled a gun and fired nearly a dozen rounds at the two officers before fleeing on foot in a wooded area.
Police Chief said the officer did not discharge their weapons because they were worried about striking the nearby homes or having someone hit by a stray bullet — given the suspect was likely out of bullets.
The officers were not injured.
When the officer made chase, his partner backed him up as the suspect was armed, leaving the unarmed suspect behind to ensure the safety of his partner chasing an armed man.
Police recovered a firearm but the suspects are at large.
The homeowner has surveillance footage which is being turned over to Trainer Police & the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division.
Update – 6:30 a.m.
YC.news’ Nik Hatziefstathiou was on location finishing up when he found a notepad with the label “Delaware County District Attorneys Office” on it. He called the Delaware County 911 Center to inform them that a detective left a notepad and he’d be on scene editing footage and could wait for them.
Moments later, two men ran up to Nik informing him that a black male with no shirt on was hiding behind their work trucks. Nik was still on the phone with 911 — he told them that the suspect was at the location where detectives recovered his firearm.
Nik then ran to towards the location where the suspect was while on the phone with police and confirmed that the suspect was by the building where the firearm was recovered and recognized the suspect by the description given earlier that morning for the news story. Police responded immediately.
The suspect was located and placed in custody at 6:18 a.m.
Our cameras were rolling — here is video of the police responding.
This is a developing story.
