Assistant United States Attorney Katayoun (“Kat”) M. Copeland was appointed by the Delaware County Board of Judges to serve as the county’s district attorney, filling a vacancy created by the election of former District Attorney John J. Whelan to the bench.
Ms. Copeland is not just any successful woman in the world of law, her passion for justice paved a path for her to work at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania where she  worked with federal investigators and prosecuted matters in the federal district courts involving international drug operations, armed robberies, large-scale RICO conspiracies and attempted murders. Copeland also successfully defended those convictions and fought for victims before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
Furthermore, Copeland coordinated with local, state and federal law enforcement to evaluate matters linked to national security concerns.

“I am honored to be chosen by the Delaware County Board of Judges as the next District Attorney,” Copeland told YC. “It is my intent that every resident come to know that this is their office, with no bounds in serving and protecting them.”

Ms. Copeland has been very active throughout her prosecutorial career in professional education having taught for a number of years at the Delaware County Municipal Police Academy and was an instructor for the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association, and most recently at ATF and El Paso Intelligence Center training programs.
Copeland, a graduate of The Baldwin School, Bryn Mawr College and Temple University’s Beasley School of Law has been a prosecutor for 25-years and a member of the United State Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for the past 6-years, assigned to its Narcotics and Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. Ms. Copeland also served for 19-years in the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.

“With my appointment, I pledge to lead this vigorous fight to ensure that Delaware County continues to be a wonderful, safe place to thrive.”

Ms. Copeland received various awards and accolades from numerous agencies including the Marple Township, Media Borough, Upper Darby Township police departments, as well as the Pennsylvania State Police, Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division, Drug Enforcement Administration and a Special Achievement Award for the successful prosecution of a violent, large-scale Philadelphia drug trafficking gang.
Full Statement from District Attorney Katayoun “Kat” Copeland

I am honored to be chosen by the Delaware County Board of Judges as the next District Attorney. For a quarter of a century, I have made the pursuit of justice my life’s work, and look forward to continuing those efforts by leading the brave men and women of law enforcement, our committed prosecutors, and our partner community agencies, who are all dedicated to serving the residents of Delaware County. It is my intent that every resident come to know that this office is their office, with no bounds in serving and protecting them. Whether that means addressing the growing threat of the opioid epidemic and seeking treatment for those suffering from life threatening addictions; combatting the violent crime that affects our quality of life; or, safeguarding the continued well-being of our senior citizens, the Office of the District Attorney will continue to support our treatment courts and battle injustice. With my appointment, I pledge to lead this vigorous fight to ensure that Delaware County continues to be a wonderful, safe place to thrive.
