In a bid to address the lingering impact of historical discrimination, Minneapolis Public Schools has defended a new contract that prioritizes laying off white teachers over teachers of color, Your Content has learned.

The agreement, set to take effect in spring 2023, was reached between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and the school district.

One of the key provisions in the contract aims to reshape the hiring and retention practices for teachers of color. According to the district, this measure seeks to “remedy the continuing effects of past discrimination.”

Under the new contract, the school district may deviate from the usual layoff order to protect teachers who belong to underrepresented populations. This prioritization would also apply in the event of rehiring staff after layoffs, as reported by the New York Post.

The Minneapolis school board believes that by implementing this contract, they can take a step towards addressing historical disparities and promoting a more inclusive educational environment.
