NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel and his wife, Mary Forrest, have shared devastating news on Twitter: their six-year-old son Henry has tragically passed away after courageously fighting an incurable neurological disorder, Your Content has learned.

Henry’s battle was with Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic mutation causing severe cognitive deficits and physical impairment.

“We always surrounded him with love,” Engel and Forrest expressed in a joint statement. Rett Syndrome is exceptionally rare, especially in boys, and currently, no cure exists for this devastating condition.

According to a memorial page on the Texas Children’s Hospital website, Henry peacefully left this world on August 9. The grieving couple is now urging people to honor their son’s memory by supporting the hospital’s Rett Syndrome research through donations, according to Daily Beast.
