FBI special agents have landed in Peru for the upcoming transfer proceedings involving Joran van der Sloot, a person of interest in the Natalee Holloway case, Your Content has learned.
The agents flew from Birmingham, Alabama, to Lima in a specially designated aircraft used for international custody transfers.
The transfer is scheduled to take place on Thursday, after which van der Sloot will be returned to the United States.
Van der Sloot, who is currently serving a prison sentence in Peru for a separate murder case, is facing extortion and fraud charges in the US.
Peruvian officials have agreed to temporarily transfer him to the US to face these charges.
The extortion and wire fraud allegations stem from an incident in 2010, where van der Sloot allegedly offered false information about Holloway’s disappearance and demanded money from her mother.
Peru initially planned to extradite van der Sloot to the US only after he completed his murder sentence.
However, the country recently changed its stance and decided to temporarily transfer him to the US first.
This decision was made to ensure that the witnesses in the case, who are elderly, could provide their testimony in a timely manner.
Despite arguments from van der Sloot’s attorney to halt the transfer, the Lima superior court has ordered his handover to FBI agents on Thursday.
The 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba remains unsolved, and van der Sloot, along with two other men, was last seen with her before she vanished.
Although no one has been charged in her death, a judge in Alabama declared her legally deceased in 2012, according to ABC 7.
