Following the devastating collapse of a building in Davenport, Iowa, a lawsuit has been filed by a woman who lost her leg in the incident, Your Content has learned.
Quanishia “Peach” Berry and her wife, Lexus, claim that the city and the building’s owner displayed a reckless disregard for their safety.
The couple is seeking compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, and lost wages.
Multiple lawsuits have been filed since the May 28 collapse, which resulted in three fatalities, numerous injuries, and displaced dozens of people.
City documents and tenant complaints suggest that concerns were raised about the building’s condition prior to the incident.
Efforts are currently underway to clear the debris and demolish the remaining structure. Governor Kim Reynolds has requested assistance from the White House, seeking reimbursement for response efforts and support for the demolition.
The estimated cost of the emergency response is at least $5 million.
While the collapse will not trigger a federal investigation due to the age of the building, the National Institute of Standards and Technology is closely monitoring the situation.
Davenport officials are also exploring avenues to hold the building’s owner accountable for the demolition costs.
The building’s owner, Andrew Wold, expressed condolences for the affected tenants but has not made any further statements.
The White House has yet to respond to the governor’s request for assistance, according to U.S. News.
