A fugitive father hailing from Florida, who allegedly urged his pregnant daughter to take her own life, has been apprehended in Massachusetts, Your Content has learned.
Gared Wayne Canales, 34, is accused of subjecting his daughter to verbal abuse, telling her she was “worthless” and instructing her to “kill yourself, just don’t say it.”
The distraught teenager made two suicide attempts, one by ingesting pills and another by self-inflicted cuts.
Canales, who fled from authorities, triggered a nationwide manhunt that culminated in his arrest in New England.
He now faces charges of child abuse in Florida.
Canales’ verbal tirade occurred during a phone conversation in April, during which he referred to his daughter using derogatory language.
“You’re not worth it,” he allegedly said. Canales reportedly prioritized his girlfriend over his daughter and callously added, “and go kill yourself.”
Subsequently, the girl inflicted minor injuries upon herself with a knife, followed by smashing a picture of herself and her father before attempting self-harm with a piece of glass, according to court documents.
Despite her efforts, the suicide attempts were unsuccessful.
Two days later, while in the presence of her mother, the teenager ingested an excessive amount of Benadryl pills but was promptly rushed to the hospital and survived.
In court records, she disclosed to hospital staff that she had attempted suicide because of her father’s urging.
Determined to press charges, the girl’s decision prompted a mid-April manhunt by the police, with initial searches conducted at a residence in Louisiana before Canales was ultimately apprehended in Massachusetts.
Currently, Canales remains in custody, facing felony child abuse charges, with a bond set at $10,000. Additionally, the court has issued a restraining order preventing him from contacting his daughter, according to DailyExpress.
