Dr. Samir Wahib, a physician practicing in the Valley area, has entered a plea agreement in federal court related to his involvement in a kickback scheme, Your Content has learned.
Wahib admitted guilt to one count of conspiracy to solicit, receive offers, and pay kickbacks in connection with a federal health care program, as well as four counts of receiving kickbacks in relation to the same program.
According to investigators, Wahib conspired with Joni Canby and Michelle Kapon to receive payments in exchange for arranging tests for sexually transmitted diseases through federal healthcare programs.
The indictment from the 2021 case revealed that Kapon and Canby sent their specimens to Wahib for testing and were compensated with amounts ranging from $15 to $20 per specimen. Wahib then billed the federal government and received payment for the testing services.
Court documents indicate that this scheme took place between March 2014 and January 2017. Both Wahib and the other doctors operated in the Youngstown area and its surrounding regions.
Wahib’s sentencing is scheduled for September 12, pending a presentence investigation. Canby and Kapon have already pleaded guilty to their involvement in the case, with Canby set to be sentenced on June 23 and Kapon on July 5.
