The beleaguered spouse of Rex Heuermann, the alleged Long Island serial killer, has initiated divorce proceedings, severing ties with her husband amidst shocking allegations of his involvement in multiple murders over the years, documents reviewed by Your Content reveal.
The records from Suffolk County Supreme Court confirm that the divorce petition was lodged today. Heuermann’s defense lawyer, Robert Macedonio, is listed as the attorney representing him in the proceedings. The documents imply that the divorce is unlikely to be contested.
Asa Ellerup shared two children with Heuermann. The family resided in Massapequa Park. Heuermann was previously married to another woman in the 1990s.
A week ago, Heuermann was apprehended in Manhattan and subsequently charged with the heinous murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Their remains, hauntingly wrapped in burlap, were unearthed along Ocean Parkway on Long Island’s South Shore in December 2010. Additionally, authorities have pegged Heuermann as the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, whose body was recovered in the same vicinity.
Legal authorities foresee additional charges, including those related to the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, being levied against Heuermann.
Heuermann had been under intense scrutiny for approximately a year prior to his arrest outside his Midtown Manhattan office. Authorities decided to move in ahead of schedule due to growing apprehension about his potential to harm again.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating Heuermann for potential links to this and other cold cases, as Your Content previously reported.
