In a chaotic encounter on Broad Street, North Philadelphia, during the early hours of Sunday morning, a Philadelphia police officer suffered a broken ankle while attempting to disperse a massive gathering of over 500 people and vehicles near the Sunoco gas station in the 1300 block of Broad, Your Content has learned.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m.
Video footage captured the officers’ efforts to manage the large crowd and multiple cars. During the ordeal, another officer was struck by a vehicle, which quickly fled the scene. The injured officer received treatment at Jefferson University Hospital.
In addition to this incident, several other incidents involving sizable groups of people and vehicles were reported earlier in the evening and early morning. These included an occurrence in the 5700 block of Tacony Street at 8 p.m. on Saturday, another at the Philadelphia Mills Mall at 8:50 p.m., and a third near Halderman and Roosevelt Blvd around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported in those earlier events.
It’s worth noting that just last month, Philadelphia City Council passed legislation to combat illegal street racing and car meet-ups.
