Tamara Louise Lorimer, a woman under the influence of alcohol, has been sentenced to five years in prison after running over her girlfriend in a tragic incident, Your Content has learned.
The Supreme Court in Broome, Western Australia, delivered the verdict of manslaughter against Lorimer this week.
The unfortunate event took place in November 2021 when Lorimer was reversing her vehicle out of their Cable Beach residence.
Her girlfriend, Doreen-Joan Lindsay, accidentally walked into the car’s path and suffered fatal injuries. Despite the efforts of the police and ambulance, Lindsay, aged 35, tragically passed away at Broome hospital.
During the trial at Broome Magistrates Court, it was revealed that Lorimer had consumed a significant amount of alcohol before the incident.
The prosecution argued that her impaired state and lack of caution constituted criminal negligence.
When the police arrived at the scene, Lorimer showed signs of intoxication.
Hospital tests later confirmed her blood alcohol level to be approximately 0.121 percent.
Lorimer’s defense lawyer, Seamus Rafferty, contended that the driveway had a blind spot due to its unusual shape, making it impossible for Lorimer to see Lindsay behind the car, regardless of her diligence.
Rafferty emphasized that the tragedy resulted in the loss of a beloved and well-respected young woman, as well as the partner of another young woman.
Chief Justice Peter Quinlan expressed sorrow over the wasteful tragedy and emphasized that no sentence could truly reflect the value of a person’s life.
He stated that there were no winners in this case, reminding everyone that it only takes a moment to irreversibly alter someone’s life.
The court sentenced Lorimer to five years of imprisonment, with the possibility of parole on June 23, 2026. Family and friends from both sides were present in court to hear the verdict, according to DailyMail.
